Furman Monroe Calcutt Junior, affectionately called “Poppy” by his family, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 27th surrounded by his devoted family and friends. Born on July 19, 1943 in Pamplico, South Carolina. Furman was the beloved son of Lottie Mae Calcutt (Dowser) and Furman Monroe Calcutt Senior and a devoted husband to Judy Elaine Skipper Calcutt. Furman has two well loved children, Allen Todd Calcutt and Sharon (Shay) Calcutt Chandler, along with his son-in-law John (Jody) Hampton Chandler. Shay and Jody have 3 children Isabella Grace, Laine Elizabeth, and John Hampton Chandler, all deeply beloved by their Poppy. Furman was incredibly proud of his son Todd and can trust his son to carry on his legacy. Brother-in-law to Furman, Clete Skipper proved to be a true brother and their bond was special. Furman was awarded the Ira S. Rainwater Senior Athletic Award in 1962 for his exceptional athletic capabilities in football, basketball, and track. Known for his athletic gifting, Furman played collegiate level basketball at Francis Marion College for 2 years. Working at the time of his enrollment, Furman was a faithful provider for his young family. For 30+ years, Furman was a dedicated car sales manager at King Cadillac where he was known for his integrity and generosity. Furman served his country nobility through 6 years in the National Guard from 1965-1971. Since giving his life to the Lord, Furman was committed to living faithfully to the Word of God and the Lord’s calling on his life. Furman attended Abundant Life Church where he was an active and respected part of the congregation. He served his church faithfully through financial consultation and was welcoming to the members and those who were visiting. He was truly delighted in taking part of his church and honoring the Lord through serving its members. He was an elder at Abundant Life and took pride in those close to him joining him at his church. One of his favorite times of the year was the annual Christmas party where he got to show his heart for his family and his church. Furman will be remembered for his devotion to the Lord, his family, and his church. Family and friends are welcomed to attend the Abundant Life Church for a Celebration of Life held on Sunday, August 30th at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 PM on Sunday, August 30, 2026 at Abundant Life Church. Arrangements being directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Furman’s memory in a way that reflects the compassion he held for others. He would have wished for an extension of grace, love, and support to those courageously walking through their own battle with cancer. In his memory, memorial contributions may be made to the McLeod Cancer Center through the McLeod Foundation, helping provide hope and care to patients and families facing this difficult journey. Furman will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all those who called him friend, father, brother, mentor, and Poppy.
