Colleen Gillis Hinton

Edna Colleen Gillis Hinton, Hartsville, SC Loving mother, wife, sister, and faithful friend, Edna Colleen Gillis Hinton, 93, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2017, surrounded by her loved ones. Colleen always remained full of life and laughter and passionate about her family, friends and The Lord. She had an infectious personality, quick smile, generous nature and a kind word for everyone. Colleen was born in Raleigh, NC, graduated from Hugh Morson High School, then Louisburg College with a degree in business. On May 26, 1949, she married Jack D. Hinton of Zebulon, NC. Colleen’s professional career included the NC Attorney General’s Office as Director of Human Resources and as Business Manager for the NC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC. During the 40 years that Colleen lived in Winston-Salem, NC, Ardmore United Methodist Church was her church home, where she continued to volunteer in the church office during her retirement. She loved to play bridge and was a member of three bridge clubs which she enjoyed hosting. Her passion for flowers led her to membership in the Sheffield Garden Club and to life membership in the NC Garden Council, for whom she also served as the business manager. Throughout the years, she and the love of her life, Jack, traveled extensively across the country taking thousands of pictures. All her friends and extended family knew her love of dancing and devotion to her cat, Ernie, her 10-year companion. Colleen was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Dexter Hinton; her parents, Henry Colon and Eva Pendergrass Gillis of Raleigh, NC; her sister, Catherine Gillis Murden of Suffolk, VA; and her brother, John Wesley Gillis of Boston, MA. Surviving are her daughter, Catherine Henry Guy and son-in-law, Jerry Guy, of Hartsville, SC; and her son, Jack Dexter Hinton, II, and daughter-in-law, Linda Jensen Hinton, of Colorado Springs, CO. Colleen has three beloved grandchildren, Chad Hughes Henry and his wife, Kristie Anderson Henry, of Copenhagen, DK; Caitlan Michelle Hinton and Jack Travis Hinton of Colorado Springs, CO. Arrangements for a graveside service in Winston-Salem, NC, are pending. Colleen’s family wants to thank the staff of Morningside Assisted Living throughout the last eight years for being her “Hartsville family” and Embrace Hospice for their amazing compassionate care for her last seven months. There is no finer example of love for others than that shown by the staff of Embrace Hospice for Colleen and her family.
